Tuesday at Home

Yesterday was a full day and tomorrow is even more dense. Tuesday we all needed a break.

We had a morning class on "Pilgrimage in the World" to prepare for tomorrow's trip to Vézelay, a short hour from Pontigny. This is where the relics of Mary Magdalen are believed to be, where St Bernard preached the Second Crusade, and the beginning of one of the four main roads to Compostela, one of the most popular Christian pilgrimages of the Middle Ages.

o  Pontigny

After lunch we met a journalist from the local newspaper; there will soon be a story about the group and the course. He was impressed with the blog and all that the students have learned and done in the past 9 days.

The rest of the afternoon was free - to nap, take a walk, read the assignment on pilgrimages for tomorrow's trip, or just relax. Some students came to the house and played volleyball (sorry - no photos - I had to mow my lawn before the predicted rain).

Before supper we taught the students about that quintessential Burgundian apéritif, the kir. It is made with crème de cassis (black current liqueur) and dry white wine (Aligoté is traditional), and makes a lovely - if sweetish - late afternoon drink. Don't skimp on cheap chime de cassis - get the good variety (costs $25 - $30); cheaper tastes like sink cleaner.

And thank you for your prayers to St Vincent!  We had hardly a drop of rain.

Tomorrow we start our pilgrimage to Compostela, and are hoping the rain continues to hold off.

Bonjour Mercay, Love reading about all that you are seeing and doing, so envious of your experiences and the food you've been having! Uncle Den is very jealous about the paella - it's one of his favorite meals!!! So enjoying the blog - thank you Terryl - I'm sure it makes a long day for you to write up the blog and upload photos - but it's fun to look at that photos and see what our favorite student has been doing. I'm predicting more wine tastings in her future! Bon soir! Love, Aunt Su
